Number 8: Go Go Mo Mo...
October is a very busy month for me in terms of crossing items off the bucket list. I was able to scratch off number 8, running a half marathon. This was a big one for me. Way back in March, everyone at my work decided we should train and run a mile race. What would now become the Timothy Q. Carroll Miracle Mile (just the co-worker who dubbed the name not a charity or anything- so don't look it up) spiraled into running a half marathon. I did not realize how easily I would succomb to peer presure and decided that I would commit to training and running this thing. In May, I was able to run just a mile in less then 9 minutes. In 4 grueling months I was consistently running 3x a week any where from 4-8 miles at a time. Overall, this was a great experience. I learned that I am physically and emotionally stonger then I had ever given myself credit for. So for those of you who don't know a half marathon is 13.1 miles and I ran it in 2 hours and 19 minutes.
Here are a couple of things I learned along the way:
.) Who ever said runners get a "high" from running is full of it. After months of training I never once experienced this feeling.
.) Even though I am the oldest, fattest, and the only mom amongst my co-workers who ran this race, I could do it.
.) I was not the oldest or fattest or the mother of the most children who participated in the race on Sunday.
.) I have the cutest cheering section!
.) The lady at Maverick will give you free water if you seem pathetic enough (this was on a failed attempt at running 10 miles.)
.) Gel inserts are not your best friend.
.) Thinking you have gone farther and just missed seeing the mile marker sign is rarely true.
.) The coolest way to tie your key into your running shoes. Beats hiding your keys in the bushes.
.) Having Sarah and Jenna to feel my pain and run with made this whole thing bearable.
.) Murphys law would have it, that Matt would show up right as I grab a drink of water and slow my pace to accomodate for drinking.
.) That I can say I ran a half-marathon, not just completed one, because I ran the hills and only walked once because I was frustrated (see#7).
.) That I do this all for myself and to set a good example for my children.
.) I can only do this because of my wonderful husband, mom, and the much needed endurance and grace given to me by God.
